It could be….

the audio is muted

Make sure you don’t have your device muted. Click on the clock in the lower right corner. In that pop up menu, adjust the volume.

the audio is being directed to the wrong output.

Make sure you aren’t playing the audio out on a different device (headphones, bluetooth headphones, a connected HDMI monitor). Click on the clock in the lower right corner. In that pop up menu, select the arrow to the right of the volume adjustment. This will only appear if the computer thinks there are multiple devices plugged in. 

a problematic external audio device

Disconnect any additional audio devices (speakers, headphones, hdmi displays)


a driver issue

Try performing a hard reset on the Chromebook by pressing Refresh  + tapping Power  until the computer returns to a login screen. This may take at least 15 times.
